Mariela Artiles

Mariela has been a film industry professional for eleven years.

Graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a BA/BSc combined Honours Degree in Audio Visual Media and Design Studies, Mariela worked on various programmes for Granada Television and the BBC before turning freelance. She has since won several awards for her work as a director, and can boast a wide range of production experience in the fields of drama, documentary, and music video, as well as on more personal, surreal, and experimental pieces.

Mariela is a regular guest lecturer on Latin American Cinema for the Department of Languages at Manchester Metropolitan University, and has delivered a series of popular and successful workshops for young people on storyboarding and film production. She has also worked as a programmer for International Film Festivals and Exhibitors for five years. As Programme Manager for Kinofilm, Manchester International Short Film Festival in 2002 and 2003, she oversaw the selection, co-ordination, and print management of 40 programmes - approximately 300 films - per festival.

In 2004 and 2005, she programmed and introduced the Latin American shorts strand of VIVA!, the Spanish and Latin American Film Festival in Manchester, UK. From 2006, she will be programming all of the short films for VIVA!. She is also collaborating with the Latin American Film Festival 2005 in London with a special programme of Brazilian films.
